Rebecca Young, who does a
dazzling impression of Judy Garland, talks about being born in a trunk in
the new revue at Tropicana, But the real world traveler in Bill Lloyd's
Masquerade is the producer himself. Judy, Judy, Judy

After a matinee performance
Rebecca told me, "I've been doing Judy Garland for about 12 years." |
The
Miami, Fla. native with the five-octave voice has been enjoying the gypsy
life of an actor, "since I first saw a one woman show
about Billie Holiday. I knew then I wanted to be in the theater." A
former jazz singer who also enjoys singing "classical, Sara Brightman-type
music," Young is happy to be back on the East Coast after a long stint in
Las Vegas. This is not her first trip to Atlantic City. "I did
Judy in Legends In Concert at Bally's Grand (now the Hilton) about
eight years ago." She met Bill Lloyd when she was introduced by her
friend Suzanne Goulet. Ms Goulet recently performed her Liza Minnelli
tribute in Legends In Concert locally. Says Young,
"We've done shows together as Judy and Liza." Asked if Liza or Lorna
Luft had ever seen her perform as Judy, she said, "No, but I would
be |
thrilled
and honored to perform (for Liza or Lorna)." Like the
rest of the versatile cast, she will perform a different character down
the road. "I just got my costume for Patsy Cline. It is a very
different voice. I had great success doing Patsy in Branson,
Mo." Young is also hoping to attract some attention while performing
in Masquerade. "I'd love to do auditions for Broadway - I'm
fearless on auditions. I work very hard and I feel it's my time.." This is
also her first time as the only girl co-starring with female
impersonators. "I met all the boys as boys so when it was time to
see them in costume, I wasn't sure who was I following." She added
with a chuckle. "I wanted to do something different." |

'legends worthy of originals |

The Fireside Dinner
Theater brings a bit of Las Vegas to Fort Atkinson with its current
production of "Legends In Concert." The glitzy revue, which promises
"live re-creations if legendary super-stars of yesterday and today,"
is having its exclusive Midwest engagement at the Fireside through March
16. The most

production
appear to work from the inside out, creating a real character and merely
imitating. Rebecca
Young as Judy Garland, is the best of the lot. Young captures the
girl/woman as well as the wobbly vibrato that made Garland the true legend
that she was. Young's uncanny rendition of "Over The Rainbow' sent chills
down my spine. |

Young shines as Judy
Garland
If Judy Garland were alive,
talented performer Rebecca Young, who looks and sounds like Garland on
stage, would enchant Garland and one day inspire her to become a star
in her own right. No, not only does Young sing like the famed star but
they have other similarities. Young who is thrilling audiences
at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City in the exciting
production of Bill Lloyd's celebrity impersonation revue Masquerade,
started singing at eight, the same age Garland began to sing in a career
that made her a superstar. For Young, whose impersonating has
had enthusiastic audience approval, singing as |
the soloist
in her church choir in her native Spartanburg, S.C. proved to be her first
step in career as an entertainer. "My father Wilford got me started,"
related Young. Her father, who died some years ago, was an
accomplished country music guitar player and singer. As her career
blossomed, Young toured and sang with a rock band, The Young
Californians, later with a band Stratus Fraction and Rebecca
Young and Boomstown, and won a prize at the 'du Maurier Search for
Stars' national talent competition. Young credits singing in hotels
at the Catskills in New York for teaching her great poise. She also
performed as Judy Garland in A Garland for Judy with the Victoria
Symphony Orchestra in Canada. As Garland, the auburn haired Young
has thrilled audiences. She does it all, from Garland's Over the
Rainbow to Patsy Cline's Crazy, and you'll enjoy every bit of
her performances. |

Tropicana's
'Masquerade' a surprise hit
By RUTH ZINMAN Ocean
City Sentinel
The only woman in Masquerade
is Rebecca Young, an almost ethereal Judy Garland who can move an audience
to tears just as the real Judy did. Singing since the age of eight,
just like Garland, Young has also perfected her impersonation as the
famous country singer Patsy Cline. After a moving interpretation of
"Over the Rainbow," young changes into a clown costume, sits down on
a trunk and sings some of Garland's best known songs including "The
Trolley Song," from "Meet Me In St. Louis."

Legends in Concert made it
seem as if I was right there in the same room with legendary stars, like
Barry Manilow, Judy Garland, Dean Martin and Elvis Presley. There
was a tingling of excitement in the air as the stars performed favorite
hits and stayed in character the whole time. I found myself
recognizing all the little quirks, expressions and quotes each famous
person was known for. Rebecca Young was a
fabulous Garland, I waited patiently, until the end of her set, for her to
perform "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Surely it was one of her most
requested songs. It was worth the wait.

Rebecca Young as Garland
is incredible. Her voice sounds so much like Judy's one was
amazed to learn she was not lip synching but using her own voice and vocal
chords. She has a powerful stage presence and incredible voice.
Bill Lloyd's
Masquerade is a gender-bender extravaganza

And then there was Judy
Garland. Well, she wasn't really Judy, but rather Rebecca Young.
As the evening's show-stopper, she belted out Judy's signature "Be A
Clown," "The Trolley Song" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Young's
voice sounds so much like Garland's and she physically resembles the
legendary singer too. Young has been amazing audiences with
her portrayal of Garland for more than a dozen years and has performed in
her stage show, A Garland for Judy. A garland to Rebecca for
a fine performance. |
